In celebration of the holiday season, Disney released the first trailer for Lasse Hällstrom's "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms," a magical Christmas story with enough starpower to create an instant classic.

Based on the 1816 fairytale "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" from E.T.A. Hoffman and Tchaikovsky's fanciful ballet, a young girl named Clara goes on a Christmas Eve adventure where danger and delight lurk at every corner. With the help of her new friend Philip, Clara travels through the Lands of Snowflakes, Flowers, Sweets and the imposing fourth realm where Mother Ginger rules all.

Clare will be played by "Interstellar"s Mackenzie Foy, with Morgan Freeman ("Shawshank Redemption") as Clara's godfather Drosselmeyer. The beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy will be played by Keira Knightley ("The Imitation Game"), with Helen Mirren ("Woman in Gold") holding court as Mother Ginger and Jayden Fowora-Knight portraying Clara's new friend. The trailer also features a sneak peek at real-life ballerina Misty Copeland twirling amidst the whirlwind tale of Christmas Eve's mysterious magic, according to EW.

According to Variety, the upcoming film suggests a sinister turn for the usually upbeat Disney, with one quote from the trailer hinting, "The legend you know has a dark side." Historically, this would be in keeping with the story's classic interpretation, as Tchaikovsky's ballet includes a battle between gingerbread soldiers and mice, a transforming Nutcracker and the insidious Mouse King. We'll just have to wait and see if the film's picturesque story includes the darker moments of the fairytale.

"The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" twirls into theaters Nov. 2, 2018. Watch the teaser trailer below.
