Philip Glass to Receive SCL Lifetime Achievement Award

A legend in film composition will be honored for his long career in film scoring. Philip Glass ("Jane") will receive the SCL Lifetime Achievement Award from The Society of Composer & Lyricists (SCL) next week, according to a SCL press release; Glass will be treated to a concerto of his work with special performances form "Jane" and "The Hours."
Glass is well-known for scoring over 200 projects, including over 100 films, and has worked with the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen, David Bowie, Yo Yo Ma and Doris Lessing. The composer has earned three Oscar nominations for "The Hours," "Notes on a Scandal" and Martin Scorsese's "Kundan," and is raking in praise for his most recent project "Jane," a documentary on Jane Goodall from Brett Morgen ("Cobain: Montage of Heck"). He recently won the National Board of Review's award for best documentary, along Hollywood Music in Media Award for "Outstanding Score" for his work on Jane; and could earn another Oscar nomination for the film. The premiere for "Jane" was held at the Hollywood Bowl and performed lived with a 73-piece orchestra so Glass' score could be fully appreciated.
The composer is known for his ability to attract a wide, diverse audience, composing over 20 operas, ten symphonies, two piano concertos and concertos for the violin, timpani, saxophone quartet and orchestra. Glass, who's now 80 years old, still delivers lectures, workshops and solo keyboard performances in between composing new work.
Glass will be honored Dec. 12 at the SCL NY Chapter Holiday Dinner and concerto at the Mist Harlem in NYC. Listen to Glass's "Jane" soundtrack below.
