'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Director Rian Johnson Launching New 'Star Wars' Trilogy

In an encouraging sign for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," director Rian Johnson has been given his own trilogy in the "Star Wars" universe. Disney and Lucasfilm announced Thursday that Johnson will write and direct the first film in the trilogy, with longtime producer Ram Bergman ("Don Jon") producing all three films. Johnson will create the trilogy's story arc.

Disney and Lucasfilm said in the statement that the trilogy will be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, with Johnson " new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." No premiere dates have been released for the films, and the studios also jokingly noted "no porgs available to comment."

Johnson and Bergman put out a brief statement on the new trilogy, saying:
We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, also threw her support behind Johnson, saying:

We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.
