'Logan' Spin-Off to Focus on X-23/Laura
von Clayton Davis
A "Logan" spin-off is in the works and it focuses on his daughter, X-23, a.k.a. Laura. Director James Mangold confirmed the project in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Mangold explained that the success of "Wonder Woman" had a lot to do with the decision to move forward on the Laura-centric story. He said:
"Patty's success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there's less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, 'Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That's incredible. And what are we going to do with her?' And that's where we are with that right now, dreaming."
Logan himself, Hugh Jackman, however, confirms he will not be part of the spin-off in any capacity. He told THR, "No, I won’t be a producer on a Laura sequel. "But I will be lining up on the Thursday night at 10 p.m. to watch it though. She is just phenomenal."
Because the film is still in development, Mangold has not shared what age Laura will be when her story resumes. Which means there may either be room for Dafne Keen to reprise the role, or it may be recast for an older actress. Keen was a breakout star when she made her big screen debut earlier this year in "Logan." She previously appeared on the television series "The Refugees." Next year, she will star opposite Andy Garcia in the title role of "Ana."
"Logan" may have been released in March, but it has had a loyal and passionate crowd calling for awards recognition. And 20th Century Fox has been hard at work on a campaign that started early. If "Logan" gets any real awards consideration during the season, it will likely accelerate the production of the Laura spin-off.
