WATCH: New Trailer Promises the Close of 'The X-Files' Biggest Plothole

The truth is out there, and it's coming this season. "The X-Files" showrunner Chris Carter ("Millenium") joined Gillian Anderson ("The Fall"), David Duchovny ("Californication") and Mitch Pileggi ("Dallas") on the main stage at New York Comic Con this weekend to unveil Season 11's official trailer. The group also teased the audience with tidbits about the sci-fi series' return, which left off in a hair-raising cliffhanger between Scully and an alien ship. Taking center stage is Scully and Mulder's progeny, a plot hole that's been bugging fans since the show's reboot.

The trailer shows brief flashes of the upcoming season, which centers on a race against time to find Scully and Mulder's "special" son William before humanity is wiped out by an invading, alien force. *cue "X-Files" noises* Scully is seen lying sick in bed, telling Mulder "I have to find our son!" before we flash to the pair running in a spooky graveyard. William B. Davis' Smoking Man also makes a menacing appearance, in young flashback form and his 2017 form, continuing his work as the Man Behind the Curtain in a world on the brink of collapse. Will they find William or will the aliens wipe out humanity for good?

The focus on William is a purposeful, necessary choice, as little has been said about Scully and Mulder's child together, leaving a gaping plot hole during the show's tenth season. Hopefully the wait will be worth it. According to EW, Carter promised at NYCC that Mulder, Scully and William's familial relationship will be a key part of the upcoming season, with the cast members giving hints about their teenage son's appearance. The showrunner also hinted at some more romantic moments between Scully and Mulder and the return of presumed-dead Lone Gunmen Langley, played by Dean Haglund ("Shakespeare Republic"), who can be seen in a brief clip from the trailer.

Time will tell if the show gets another season in 2019, as Anderson told Screenrant she may not return for Season 12. The actor has been the sole principal character who appeared in every season of the original show; Duchovny left during the eighth season before returning for the "X-Files" films.
