Kate Winslet Reunites with James Cameron for 'Avatar' Sequels

Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet has signed on for at least one of the upcoming "Avatar" sequels, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Winslet reunites with "Titanic" director James Cameron for "Avatar 2."
While she received her first Academy Award nomination for the 1996 film "Sense and Sensibility," most film fans cite 1997's Best Picture "Titanic" as Winslet's true breakthrough. She was nominated for her second Oscar for that film. She subsequently went on to additional nominations for "Iris," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Little Children," and "Steve Jobs." She won her first prize for "The Reader."
Winslet's latest film, "The Mountain Between Us" is in theaters this week. Additionally, her new collaboration with Woody Allen, "Wonder Wheel," will make its debut at NYFF next week.
James Cameron directed Winslet in "Titanic." That film became the highest grossing film of all time, making more than $2 billion worldwide. It broke the previous record set by "E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial" from Steven Spielberg. Cameron later went on to break his own record with the first "Avatar" film. "Titanic" tied the record for most Academy Award nominations with 14 and wins with 11. It won Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Original Song, and more. Both Winslet and veteran actress Gloria Stewart earned nominations for playing Rose, although neither won.
The details of "Avatar 2" are still under wraps. However, Winslet joins a growing cast of notable actors including returning stars Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, and Zoe Saldana. The cast also includes Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, and Oona Chaplin.
At the moment, Winslet is only confirmed for the second film. However, with filming of the second and third films running concurrently, she may appear in others, too.
"Avatar 2" is scheduled to open December 18, 2020.
