Italy Selects 'A Ciambra' for Foreign Language Oscar Race

Italy's Film Commission selected "A Ciambra" as its official entry into the Academy Award race for Best Foreign Language Film. Variety reported the announcement early Tuesday morning.

The film is the story of a teenage boy living in a small community in southern Italy. It screened earlier this year as part of the Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight.

"A Ciambra" is director Jonas Carpignano's follow up to his debut "Mediterranea," which screened at Cannes' Critics Week in 2015. Carpignano wrote and directed both films. "Mediterranea" received a number of nominations from festival and critics groups.

Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese served as an executive producer on "A Cambria."

Italy holds the record for most wins of any country in the Foreign Language Film category. With 17 nominations and 11 wins, Italy last took the prize in 2014 for Paolo Sorrentino's celebrated film, "The Great Beauty."

With the latest announcement, the Foreign Language category grows even more competitive. Featuring a record number of entries, the competition for the 90th Academy Awards promises a diverse collection of international cinema.
