Shonda Rhimes Signs Deal With Netflix, Ends Relationship With ABC

After more than a decade with ABC, TV powerhouse Shonda Rhimes is joining forces with Netflix, according to Variety.
Rhimes launched her production company, Shondaland, in 2005. Her first television series, "Grey's Anatomy," was an instant hit. Now moving into its 14th season, the medical drama has won a number of Golden Globes and Primetime Emmys. Rhimes continued the winning streak with other hits including "Grey's" spin-off "Private Practice," "Scandal," and "How to Get Away With Murder."
"Scandal" is week's away from premiering its seventh and final season, which will stay at ABC. Another planned "Grey's" spin-off will also stay at the Disney-owned network.
While the details of the Shondaland/Netflix deal are under wraps, Rhimes told Variety:
"Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company,” said Rhimes in a statement. “Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix.”
Ted Sarandos is the chief content officer at Netflix. He told Variety:
“Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer, Netflix, in a statement. “Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I’ve gotten the chance to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart — she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We’re so excited to welcome her to Netflix.”
This announcement broke on Sunday, just days after Netflix announced a major deal with the Coen Brothers.
Shonda Rhimes had a contract with ABC that was set to expire in June 2018. The two have reportedly agreed to terms allowing her to leave sooner. Last week, Disney announced plans to launch its own streaming service in 2019. It is unclear whether "Scandal" and "Grey's Anatomy" will remain with Shondaland and Netflix, or if they will be part of the new service when the time comes.
