'Stranger Things' Director Rebecca Thomas Tapped to Direct Fox's 'Malignant'

"Malignant Man" is heading to the silver screen with Rebecca Thomas ("Stranger Things") leading the way, according to THR. The director was just chosen by Fox to direct the sci-fi action film, with comic co-creator James Wan producing.
The film is an adaptation of Boom! Studios comic "Malignant Man," with Ross Ritchie and Stephen Christy from Boom! producing with Wan via his production banner Atomic Monster. Adam Yoelin from Boom! is co-producing, with Matt Reilly overseeing the project for Fox.
"Malignant" is scripted by Zak Olkewicz ("Elimination"), and follows one man's journey from a dying patient to superhero. Alex Gates suffers from a malignant tumor, which he discovers is actually an alien parasite. Gates becomes an ultrapowered superhero tasked with a dubious war between a secret army lurking in Earth's society, and a personal war with his own secrets.
Thomas takes over from director Brad Peyton ("San Andreas"), who was previously attached to the sci-fi flick. Thomas previously directed Netflix's "Stranger Things," along with helming "Electrick Children." Her current projects are a live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid" over at Universal, and Paramount's film adaptation of John Green's "Looking For Alaska."
As THR notes, Thomas is one of only two filmmakers who's directed a "Stranger Things" episode apart from showrunners the Duffer brothers and Shawn Levy. Andrew Stanton ("Wall-E") is the other, who wrote "Wall-E," "Finding Nemo," and the "Toy Story" series. Thomas' steadfast work amidst such big players points to the up and comer's directing abilities and bright filmmaking future.
No word yet on when principal photography will begin on "Malignant."
