TIFF: Documentaries, Midnight Madness, and Short Cuts

Toronto International Film Festival has announced their lineups for documentaries, Midnight Madness, and Short Cuts for the upcoming 2017 festival.
In the documentary section, the opening night feature will be "Grace Jones: Bloodlight & Bami" from Sophie Fiennes. The film is about the on and offstage life of the legendary performer. Morgan Spurlock returns with "Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!" Brett Morgen will share his film about legendary primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, "Jane." Greg Barker takes a look deep inside President Obama's foreign policy team in the film "The Final Year."
TIFF Docs Programmer Thom Powers said:
"Resistance is a key theme in this year's documentaries. We pay witness to rebels challenging the status quo in art, politics, sexuality, religion, fashion, sports, and entertainment. They speak powerfully to our times as audiences seek inspirations for battling powerful and corrupt systems."
The Midnight Madness Section will be run by new programmer Peter Kuplowsky. It features 10 films that are expected to draw big crowds. The opening night feature is "Bodied" from Joseph Kahn and starring Anthony Michael Hall. A film that is sure to draw a lot of attention is James Franco's highly anticipated "The Disaster Artist," based on the making of Tommy Wiseau's notorious 2003 film, "The Room." Nicholas Cage and Selma Blair star in Brian Taylor's "Mom and Dad," about a mysterious outbreak that inexplicably causes parents to attack their children.
The Short Cuts section is a collection of 35 short films, including animated, live action, and documentary. The films come from 30 countries, and 17 of them were directed by women. The program will include films from Niki Lindrothvon Bahr ("The Burden"), Denis Walgenwitz and Winshluss ("The Death, Dad & Son"), and actress Justine Bateman makes her short film directorial debut with "FIVE MINUTES."
