Kevin Spacey ("House of Cards") is set to play the late Gore Vidal in a new biopic about the lauded author's life. Variety broke the news that Spacey is already in Vidal's home country, Italy, shooting "Gore," which is being produced by Netflix. According to Variety, Spacey is currently shooting in Rome, but will soon journey on to Vidal's former villa in Ravello.

The villa, situated on the Almalfi Coast, was a hotspot for Gore's inner circle, which included Greta Garbo, Lauren Bacall, Andy Warhol, Susan Sarandon, and Mick Jagger. The villa is named La Rondinaia, or Swallow's Nest, due to its likeness to a nest perched on the edge of the seacliff. The author's home, particularly his study, will feature heavily in the new film, which is set in the 1980s. Vidal did sell the place back in 2004, but as the author lived there for decades, it makes sense for the villa to be featured as Vidal's home.
Director Michael Hoffman ("The Last Station") will helm the film, with Andy Paterson ("The Railway Man") producing. While several documentaries have been produced about Vidal, this will be the first feature film focusing on the author and playwright. Vidal passed away in 2012 at the age of 86.
Spacey is a well-regarded actor who's known for critically acclaimed hits like "American Beauty" and "House of Cards." The dramatic actor has received two Oscars for Best Actor for his roles in "American Beauty" and "The Usual Suspects," along with a Golden Globe in 2015 for his role in "House of Cards" and a BAFTA for "American Beauty."
No other casting info has been announced, and no premiere date has been released.
