'Mr. Robot' Creator Sam Esmail to Helm Bermuda Triangle Pic for Universal

Universal Pictures is moving forward with plans for a Bermuda Triangle film with director Sam Esmail, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Esmail is the creator of the hit USA series "Mr. Robot," which stars Rami Malek. Esmail received two Primetime Emmy Award nomination for the freshman season of his series. "Mr. Robot" won the Golden Globe for Best Television Drama Series last year, as well as earning awards and nominations for Malek and co-star Christian Slater.

The untitled Bermuda Triangle film has been in the works at Universal for some time. Multiple scripts were attempted and rejected. In addition to directing, Esmail will also be writing the film. However, there is no word yet on the story or possible casting.

The Bermuda Triangle is a section of the Caribbean between Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. Ships and planes have reportedly been lost or thrown off course in the region. This prompts many different rumors and theories. It is the subject of countless books, and has inspired everything from an episode of "Scooby Doo" to a song from Barry Manilow. There have also been a number of documentaries of the area. And, there are quite a few specials from paranormal investigators and historians.

This is not the only Bermuda Triangle film in the works. Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man") is also in talks to direct a similarly themed film for Skydance. There are also rumors that Warner Bros. has a Bermuda Triangle film planned, too.

The announcement about Esmail comes on the heals of the news that his series "Homecoming" got a two season order from Amazon. He is also set to write and direct the upcoming mini-series "Metropolis," an adaptation of the 1927 silent film by Fritz Lang.
