Airwolf [1]
von Claudia Wendt

The game Airwolf is based on the US TV series from 1984. The flight simulation was released for the NES.
The start screen greets you with the theme tune of the series. Due to the age of the sounds it leaves a lot to be desired. The single player simulation Airwolf gives few options. At the start of the game, you will receive instructions on your 1st mission and instructions on how to achieve your mission goal. The text output is in pure English. But even without knowledge of English, the mission goals are self-explanatory. The missions are often repeated and offer little variety. The 3 main missions are based on destroying the enemy, saving your own people and not being destroyed yourself.
Gameplay
The game is played from the cockpit perspective. Altitude, speed, weaponry and fuel are relevant for the missions. Always keep an eye on the radar and pay attention to your own perception. The cockpit display takes up a lot of space on the screen. This can lead to problems at one point or another, in which, for example, goals are overlooked.
Graphic
The optics of the air and ground world is difficult to see. A better representation would have been possible. Air and living space are divided by a line in 2 colors. These are mainly green and brown or blue. Enemies, bases, and buildings can be difficult to spot in one place or another. The radar is not particularly helpful here. You start the game with 3 lives. With a higher score you can get additional lives. The statistics are displayed at the end of each mission.
There is no lack of armament in the game. Gun ammunition and rockets are used for shooting. Targeting can be problematic. It seems a bit sluggish. Be careful of your own fuel during the game, otherwise you will crash. On the way there is one or the other fuel tank to refuel.
Release history
Airwolf was released for Arcade, Famicom, and NES. The developer and publisher of the arcade game is Kyugo. Beam Software took over NES development. The publisher of the NES version was Acclaim.
Conclusion
The level of difficulty of the game is high and the graphics are poor. That doesn’t excuse the age of the game because other games of the time were able to portray it all better. There is a lack of detail and variety in the game. The controls seem sluggish and the mission goals are not easy to achieve. Better keep your hands off this game.
