Ryan Coogler's 10 Rules For Success

He's an American film director and screenwriter.



His first feature film, Fruitvale Station, won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.



He also wrote and directed the seventh film in the Rocky film saga, Creed.



1. Create from the heart

During his youth, he ran track and played football.



2. Don't be short-sighted

He started his college journey at Saint Mary's College of California on a football scholarship.



3. Get talented players

After Saint Mary's canceled its football program, he transferred to Sacramento State, where he majored in finance and took as many film classes as he could.



4. Have a passion for your craft

He attended USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he made a series of short films.



5. Find your true path

While at USC, Coogler directed four short films, three of which won or were nominated for various awards.



6. Achieve greatness

His first feature-length film, Fruitvale (later retitled Fruitvale Station), tells the story of the last 24 hours of the life of Oscar Grant.



7. Have a backup plan

Fruitvale Station premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film.



8. Express your emotions

Fruitvale Station was also screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where it won the award for Best First Film.



9. Make good decisions

He wrote and directed the seventh film in the Rocky film saga, Creed (2015).



10. Get inspiration

In January 2016, Coogler signed on to co-write and direct the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther.
