What is tinnitus?

What causes tinnitus?
Tinnitus occurs when the hearing hairs in our inner ear are damaged. These hairs move according to the sound waves reaching our ears. Auditory nerves perceive these movements and interpret them as sound. However, when these hairs are damaged, the nerves misinterpret the message and cause us to hear a voice that is absent.
