What is Savant Syndrome?

Savant syndrome is a condition in which an individual under normal intelligence shows a special ability or skill in a specific area. Children who exhibit savant syndrome are traditionally called disabled or autistic savants.
Since the syndrome is usually associated with autism, the term autistic savant is used more. The first known description of a person with Savant syndrome was made in 1751 in a German psychology journal. This term was first used in 1887 by J. Langdon Down, the doctor who gave the name to Down syndrome.
