Death of former Australian Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke
Labor's Bob Hawke, who headed the Australian government from 1983 to 1991, died on Thursday at the age of 89, his family said.
Current Prime Minister Scott Morrison, a member of the Liberal Party, praised the memory of his predecessor.
"Bob Hawke was a great Australian, who led and served our country with passion, courage, and intellectual power that strengthened our country," he wrote on social media.
The death of Bob Hawke, who was the 23rd prime minister of Australia, comes two days before Saturday's general election, for which the Labor Party is given a slight lead in the polls.
"The Australians loved Bob Hawke because they knew that Bob loved them, that was true until the end," said Labor Party leader Bill Shorten.
"I consider Bob Hawke as the best Labor Prime Minister ever," said former Conservative leader John Howard this year......
