Tsai Ing-wen calls to defend democracy

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday called for the support of the international community to defend democratic values and the way of life on the autonomous island, while Beijing renewed its threats against Taiwan.

"We hope the international community will take this seriously and support and help us," Tsai Ing-wen told reporters, referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping's statement a few days earlier.

Relations between Beijing and Taipei have deteriorated since Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen took office in 2016 in favor of Taiwan's official independence, a request deemed unacceptable by Beijing.
