You have to live a little to really enjoy this truck driving thing.
So, get out of that truck and live a little!
There comes a time when every truck driver feels at least a little burnt out. After all, sitting in a truck for days, weeks or months at a time can wear on even the most ardent driver. Getting out of the truck to live a little isn't a bad thing to do.

But, what's a truck driver to do?

There's an argument among some that most drivers don't make much money and can't afford to "live a little". I agree, there are some drivers who don't make a lot. Some just barely survive, so, they stay in their trucks all the time. This leads to accelerated burn out.

I used to wonder myself, what can I do? I'm sitting in a truck stop, maybe in a town, maybe miles from a town. What's there to do here?

The most inexpensive thing a driver can do is go for a walk. A lot of truck stops, especially Travel Centers of America (T/A), have a designated path for drivers to walk. Admittedly, most seem to be more for exercise than pleasure but a walk can still invigorate a driver and provide relaxation. Also, a lot of the rest areas along the highways have walking trails as well.

Some truck stops are located right in a town, or very near one. It takes only a little effort to walk from the truck stop down the street to the town. There you'll find shops, restaurants and maybe even a theater. Peruse the shops and different venues. Open your eyes to a world outside of the truck and truck stop.

My wife and I enjoy zoos. So when we have the extra time, we'll visit the local zoo. Most cities now have one and no two are the same. We've found this to not only be relaxing and educational, it's also healthy for us as we do a lot of walking to get around the zoo.

It really doesn't matter what you do as much as it does that you just do something. Something besides hibernate in your truck. Something that broadens your horizon. Something, anything, that breaks up the boredom that can come when imprisoning yourself in that truck.

Remember, just as you would leave your place of work at the end of a long day in the factory, so too should you do with your truck driving job. Yes, it's a lifestyle few understand, but it's also a job. Get away from it once in a while.
