David Wallace: Playing For Pleasure

David Wallace strikes the right note

‘David is a fantastic piano teacher’, says Ros McHugh. ‘He is endlessly patient and he demystifies the piano by breaking things down into simple components, step by step. The result is that, within weeks, he will have you playing whatever music you like.’

Perhaps one reason why Grove Park-based David Wallace is so popular with pupils like Ros is that he appreciates the learning process from the ‘other side’. ‘I went to lessons when I was nine. I hated them and left after two years.’ Only later in life did David return to the piano (via playing semi-pro jazz trumpet). ‘Of course, I had to start all over again,’ he recalls. ‘But I thought, if the method I used worked for me, then it would do so for others.’ He began giving lessons 20 years ago, teaching all ages and levels from beginners to those refreshing long-lost skills.

‘I think I can empathise with my pupils,’ he smiles. ‘I always try to explain technicalities in an interesting way and I don’t do grades – I don’t like the “you must learn this piece to pass an exam” approach.’ David visits pupils at home and each class last 40 minutes. ‘The secret is to teach people the tunes they want to learn – there’s nothing more enjoyable than playing music you love.’
