Taiwan is a destination for many Filipinos looking for jobs and education. Like in migrant communities everywhere, the regions and subnational groups from which Filipinos in Taiwan come from are often unknown to most outsiders. But among those living here, retaining these communities are of great importance. In early April I was invited by a classmate to join a group of Ifugao Filipinos for a small gathering in Taipei Expo Park. The purpose of the event was to celebrate Gotad, an Indigenous holiday of thanksgiving practiced by the highland Ifugao people in the northern Philippines.
