First installment of property taxes due July 14

HILLSBORO -- Montgomery County taxpayers have just over a week until the first installment for 2022 property taxes due this year.

Montgomery County Treasurer Nikki Lohman reminds county residents that this installment for real estate taxes will be due on July 14.

Lohman's office sent out tax bills to real estate owners on July 14. However, due to ongoing issues with the United States Postal Service, many have not received their bill.

Options available to pay property taxes this year

She reminds residents that due to a construction project at the Historic Courthouse that they have several options to pay their bill. They can pay online, via mail, or any of the county's banking institutions.

Lohman encourages those who choose to pay in person to be cautious around the construction area. In addition, anyone who comes to the Historic Courthouse but is having concerns about getting in safely may contact her office. Someone will come out to pick up the tax bill.

If you choose to mail your payment, they must be postmarked by July 14. They will be accepted as paid on time with that postmark even if it arrives at her office days after that date.

Mailed-in payments can go to Montgomery County Treasurer and Collector, 1 Courthouse Square Room 101, Hillsboro, IL 62049. Payments can also be dropped off in the gray drop box on the north side of the courthouse.

For those better technically inclined, they can remit their payments online via the county's website.

Penalties for delinquent payments are 1.5% per month or a fraction thereof as stated on the payment stub. Penalty assessment will begin on July 15, one day after the first installment is due.
