The $200 million Rembrandt begins its tour of the Netherlands In May 2022, Rembrandt's "The Standard Bearer", recently acquired by the Dutch state for $200 million, begins its tour of several museums in the Netherlands. Naturally, the acquisition of “The Standard Bearer” by the Dutch state has been the subject of huge media coverage in the Netherlands, and the painting has gained considerable popularity in recent months, due both to the undisputed quality of the work and the price paid for it, and to a number of somewhat questionable statements on the painting that we have already commented on in theartwolf.com. Now that the acquisition has been completed, the painting will begin a "tour" of the Netherlands, being exhibited for a month in a museum in each Dutch province. Specifically, the museums that the painting will visit over the next 12 months will be the following: Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, Friesland (May 2022) Centraal Museum in Utrecht, Utrecht (June 2022) Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, North Holland (July 2022) Drents Museum in Assen, Drenthe (August 2022) Kunstlinie in Almere, Flevoland (September 2022) Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, North Brabant (October 2022) Mauritshuis in The Hague, South Holland (November 2022) Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede, Overijssel (December 2022) Museum Arnhem in Arnhem, Gelderland (January 2023) Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg, Zeeland (February 2023) Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, Limburg (March 2023) Groninger Museum in Groningen, Groningen (April 2023) The Rijskmuseum has explained that each of these museums "will present ‘The Standard Bearer’ in its own context and use its own resources to introduce Rembrandt’s masterpiece to audiences of all ages". In addition, to help ensure that everyone who wants to see the work can do so, all of the above museums will offer free admission for at least one day during the period that "The Standard Bearer" is on view. After its visit to the Groninger Museum, the painting will return to the Rijskmuseum in Amsterdam, which will be its permanent home.
