Remember when, as a kid, you'd see other kids with a blue tongue, black teeth, and lips like they'd just passed A-grade in Goth school?
If'n you do then you'd remember fangin' on a Choo Choo bar!
The Choo-Choo Bar was originally made by Plaistowe in Western Australia. Hearsay suggests it arrived in the early 1950s – it was certainly advertised by 1954. The wrapper of the chewy liquorice-flavoured toffee bar originally depicted a train being driven by a very non-PC gollywog. Choo-Choos were discontinued sometime in the 1990s after Nestlé acquired Plaistowe, but were revived after Lagoon Confectioners purchased the brand in 2007.
The Choo Choo bar - arguably the best treat a kid could eat!
The steam train (the Choo-Choo Funtime Express) on the Choo-Choo Bar wrapper is being ridden by a cast of cartoon characters. The train remains, but the original gollywog driver has since been replaced by a monkey. Thank you Political Correctness!! There is also a raspberry-flavoured Choo-Choo.
In their day, Choo Choo bars had many benefits. For one, kid's couldn't talk real well when they were suckin' on a Choo Choo bar - hence a much more peaceful home environment for parents!
For another, if your daughter had been out too late and come home with black lips then it wouldn't be too hard to track down the perpetrator responsible - that is, of course, if she hadn't been to a Choo Choo binge party!
I guess the only down side is if your daughter (or son) started showing signs of dental decay (see below) the the dentists bill could start to climb...
Parents!! If your kids start to look like this get 'em off the Choo Choo bar habit!
Anyway, I don't believe they're too dangerous. And if anyone doubts the nutritional value of these wonderful treats then check out what they're made out of below..
