Tom Brady – New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI
Tom Brady is one of the very few players who could make it onto this list for performances in different Super Bowls, and with different teams too. Super Bowl LI was arguably his finest moment, as he led the New England Patriots from behind to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 for the biggest comeback win in Super Bowl history.
It’s easy to forget now but Brady actually started the game slowly, as his pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown that gave the Falcons a 21-0 lead. After the lead was extended to 28-3 and fans started to lose hope of a comeback, Brady began to bring the Patriots back into the game with precise passing driving them forward. 43 completed passes from 62 attempts for 466 passing years told the story of his day.
Joe Montana – San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV
Another of the sport’s iconic quarterbacks, Joe Montana played in his final Super Bowl in this game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos. It ended with the biggest rout in Super Bowl history, as Montana led the 49ers to a 55-10 win with a masterful performance.
He completed 22 of 29 passing attempts for 297 yards and helped set a Super Bowl record of five touchdowns. This became the third time he won the MVP title in the season’s biggest game, and it was the fourth time he won the Super Bowl. It was an almost perfect performance that the Broncos simply had no answer to.
John Riggins - Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVII
This pulsating game ended in a 27-17 win for the Washington Redskins against the Miami Dolphins, and a lot of that was down to running back John Riggins. He scored a touchdown, was voted MVP and set new Super Bowl records for the most rushing yards (166) and also for the most rushing attempts, with 38. In fact, he racked up more yards than the entire Dolphins team.
He was 33 years old at the time of this game and became the first NFC player to rush over 100 yards during a Super Bowl. It came at the end of a hugely productive postseason for Riggins, as he had scored three touchdowns in the three games in the playoffs. The Super Bowl was the fourth game in a row that he rushed for over 100 yards, which set another new record.
Jerry Rice – San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIII
Another San Francisco 49ers player to produce an unstoppable performance when it mattered most, Jerry Rice was the MVP in Super Bowl XXIII, where the 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16. This was an incredible show by the receiver, who caught 11 passes for a total of 215 yards and scored a touchdown too.
Rice’s performance was so impressive that it eclipsed even Joe Montana’s wonderful play at QB. The game is now best remembered for Montana driving the 49ers up the field in the last three minutes to score the match-winning points, but Rice had already earned his MVP award by then.
Marcus Allen, Los Angeles Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII
This version of the Super Bowl in early 1984 saw the LA Raiders beat the Washington Redskins 38-9. It was the biggest score ever recorded by an AFC team in the football season’s showpiece and still remains the last time that an AFC team has won the NFL’s championship game.
Among a slew of top performances by the Raiders, Marcus Allen stands out thanks to his 20 carries for a total of 191 yards. Of course, the moment we all remember from this game is the 74-yard TD that he ran home in such spectacular style.
Doug Williams, Washington Reskins in Super Bowl XXII
Doug Williams made history in this game by becoming the first African American QB to lead his team to Super Bowl victory. He did it in a 42-10 win for the Washington Redskins against the Denver Broncos. His performance was remarkable considering that he had started the season as a backup before guiding the Redskins through two playoff victories and then into this high-pressure event.
The game started slowly for the Washington team, as they were losing by 10-0 when the first quarter came to an end. However, an amazing second quarter saw them rack up 35 points without reply. As for Williams, he completed 18 of his 29 passes and completed a total of 340 yards including four touchdowns.
