WATCH: Evil Lurks in a Romanian Abbey in the Teaser Trailer for 'The Nun'

New Line Cinema finally gives us a glimpse of the upcoming horror film, "The Nun."

In the vein of "Annabelle," this film is both a spin-off and a prequel to "The Conjuring 2." The character of an evil nun was introduced in that film, as an evil presence that haunted Vera Famiga's demonologist, Loraine Warren.

The official synopsis was provided by the studio:

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate.  Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret.  Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in “The Conjuring 2,” as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

Demián Bichir stars as Father Burke. Bichir was nominated for an Academy Award for his leading role in "A Better Life" in 2011. He also starred in "The Hateful Eight" and "Alien: Covenant."

Taissa Farmiga plays Sister Irene. Farmiga is best known for her roles on several season of "American Horror Story" on FX. This casting is interesting, though, because she is the younger sister of Vera, who starred in "The Conjuring" films.

Bonnie Aarons plays The Nun. She also played the same role in "The Conjuring 2." Aarons also appeared in films like "Silver Linings Playbook," "The Fighter," and "The Princess Diaries."

"The Nun" also stars Jonas Bloquet ("Elle"), Charlotte Hope ("Game of Thrones"), and Ingrid Bisu ("Toni Erdmann").

Corin Hardy directs. Most of Hardy's films so far have been shorts, but he also directed "The Hallow" in 2015.

Gary Dauberman wrote the screenplay. He was one of the writers for "It," and is apparently the only credited writer for "It: Chapter Two." He also wrote "Annabelle."

For this film, Dauberman's script is developed from a story idea he created with James Wan. Wan directed the two "Conjuring" films and serves as a producer on this project.

Following the surprise success of last year's "It," New Line and Warner Bros. will release "The Nun" on September 7.
