The Edge Productions to Debut Edgy and Erotic David Ives Play Venus in Fur
Things are about to get a whole lot more erotic and chaotic this weekend as The Edge Productions presents David Ives’ Venus in Fur at Sho Studios opening tonight (Nov. 22) and running to Dec. 2. Theatre goers can expect a sophisticated and seductive story that will trigger discussions about power among the genders as well as more generally throughout society.

In Venus in Fur, a young actress named Vanda is determined to land the lead role in a new play based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s 19th century erotic novel Venus in Furs. During her audition, she gets caught up in an electrifying game of cat and mouse with the director, depicted through a sophisticated model of metatheatre.

Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas' interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win. A mysterious, funny, erotic drama that represents yet another departure for the multifaceted Ives.

In addition to its depiction of a deeply complex relationship, Ives’ play includes references to a myriad of related ancient and classical sources. Mentions of Greek mythology, ancient tragedies and Renaissance art enrich the piece and move it beyond a simple cat and mouse situation that the audience witnesses. Ultimately, Ives expertly offers a nearly complete survey.

The Edge Productions is known for crafting thoughtful and edgy theatre. Earlier this year, the group toured across Ontario with a successful all-female version of Henry V. Previously, they received raving reviews for tackling teen pregnancy in the touching and socially awkward play The Pregnancy Pact last August and they let their pride shine in the 1970s gay romp The Boys in the Band by Mart Crowley last June.

Venus in Fur runs tonight (Nov. 22), as well as Nov. 23-24 and Nov. 29 to Dec. 2. All shows are 8pm, except for a 2pm matinee on Dec. 2. Tickets start at $25 and are available online. After Windsor, the show moves on to Toronto.
