Learned The Hard Way: How To Reduce Your Development Costs from $XXX.000s to $XX.000s | The Next Women - Business Magazine

My first product cost $XXX.000s to develop, the next five cost $XX.00s combined. We’ve read the books, and drawn up the businesses cases. We’ve aired it with our friends at pubs, with our family over the kitchen table, with our mentors in their plush offices and expressed until blue in the face at the bank. My first product in BLYSS was probably my most painful experience. Here are my pointers about how and why my first innovation cost so much more than the following five products combined. A quick caveat: of course, economies of scale are expected (from first to following products), especially in manufacturing. I’m discounting these costs, I’m speaking ONLY about Go To Market learnings, and what the difference was in learning from the first (excellent) but slightly weak product which lead to a flood of follow-up products that proved themselves before they left the atelier.
