Around 10 million people spend their vacations volunteering in a foreign country every year. These 'voluntourists' work for one to four weeks in orphanages, or women empowerment projects in slums,or teach in under-privileged communities. Most of the volunteers are young and adventurous, about 90% are women. What most of them have in common: they are not qualified for the work they do.
