Awards: Can Tom Hanks Break His Oscar Nomination Drought?

It hasn't been a beautiful day in the Oscar world for Tom Hanks as of late. Despite being a two-time Oscar winner, the beloved film star has had an unfortunate awards drought. In fact, his period away from the Oscars has been longer than the honeymoon phase he had with them. His first nomination was for "Big" back in 1988 and his last one for "Cast Away" came 12 years after.
When "Captain Phillips" came out, it seemed like he'd earn another bid once more. He earned a Critics Choice, Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA nomination. Hanks even earned some of the best reviews of his career. So, it seemed like it would all come together. Yet, while the film became a Best Picture nominee, Hanks was left out in the cold.
A similar trend has continued since then. In 2015, "Bridge of Spies" became another Best Picture nominated financial success, but still nothing for Hanks. Both "Sully" and "The Post" also seemed like prime opportunities to nominate him. Alas, neither chances came to fruition.
A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
"A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" proves to be his latest opportunity at Oscar glory. As beloved children's show host Mister Rogers, Hanks pulls off a perfect fusion of actor and character. It's a more supporting role than his top billing in the marketing would suggest. However, his traditional movie star magic remains present in his portrayal within a very accessible picture.
Given the Academy's penchant for rewarding biopic performances and the film's potential to be an audience favorite, that should make Hanks a safe bet. As of now, Hanks is ranked fourth in our Best Supporting Actor predictions. The only potential handicap for him is the competitiveness of the category with other former Oscar winners like Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino looking to make their own comeback. Plus, there's the possibility that the film somehow doesn't land with viewers. It all depends on the opening weekend.
