How to Style A Vintage Dress in Modern Ways | VRAI Magazine

One Sunday last January, while exploring my parents' closet for some carnival costume, a white beautiful polka dot dress caught my eye. I learned it belonged to my grandmother and was originally made in the Fifties.

My grandmother was always a sophisticated woman. At that time she was an opera singer at the renowned Richard Wagner opera house in Bayreuth, Germany, so she got to wear the most amazing and beautiful dresses.

But in her private life she went for timeless designs: In her opinion a dress was something to use for many years, beyond the short-lived fashion trends. She preferred expensive, long lasting and exclusive fabrics like silk, velvet or cashmere. When she visited her dressmaker she always had exact ideas on what her dress should look like.

Even her wedding dress was extraordinary: a long green dress made out of velvet.

Now in 2015, her polka-dot dress is still timeless and the midi length looks more modern than ever. Combined with the right accessories you can wear such vintage dress to - almost - every occasion. Follow me and I will show you how.

Look no. 1: The Fashionista

There is one piece in your closet that makes you look cool and edgy in any outfit: the leather jacket. I love the contrast between old and elegant dresses, the modern studded heels and the blue shades. I would certainly wear this outfit in my everyday life - ok, maybe not for shopping at the food market but definitely for a nice evening at a restaurant.

Look no.2: The Retro

In Vienna, going to the opera is almost routine but still something very special. At the Vienna State Opera elegant and classy dressing is a must. Every time I go there it almost feels like a promnight- just a little more grownup. For this outfit I choose an old fur collar and some fancy gloves, both again from my grandmother. The vintage-looking shades and the bag are a perfect match.

For those of you who like an outfit with a little pop of color this is the best way to style it! Take a pair of funky heels (or flats!) and a special bag to make your outfit outstanding. But make sure to keep it classy - too much color will kill it.
